Moonwalk, a show of Dean Potter practicing slackline in front of the moon
The origins of the slackline are associated with the climbers of the Yosemite Valley in California (USA) in the early 1980s. Adan Grosowsky and Jeff Ellington began to walk on slack chains and cables near the parking lots to entertain themselves. Over time, the hobby evolved and they began to use the climbing equipment to walk on it. The sport flourished from there among the climbers of the valley, and later spread throughout the world.
Today it is a very popular sport among the climbing community and there are slackline schools around the world that have evolved the sport into several modalities:
Trickline: The most widespread type of slackline is the trickline where the tape is located a short distance from the ground and is very tight.
Waterline: This modality is done on top of the water.
Longline: The Longline is based on tapes over 30 meters long and 25 millimeters wide.
Highline: The most extreme modality is known as highline and is performed on tapes located more than 20 meters high.
